Cryptocurrencies gained after the Securities and Exchange Commission dropped a crypto lawsuit, and investors separately bet the SEC will soon approve a bitcoin exchange-traded fund.
Bitcoin recently traded at about $29,581, according to CoinDesk, up 3.1% from its level 24 hours earlier. The XRP token was up about 8%.
The biggest cryptocurrency briefly rose above $29,000 earlier this week but hasn't sustained that level through late-afternoon trading since mid-August, CoinDesk data shows.
Shares in Coinbase Global (COIN), the U.S.-listed crypto exchange, rose 2% in recent trading.
